An addition to the mid-century H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse building in Washington, DC.

The Project

A horizontal expansion of the existing courthouse with the intent to modernize, revitalize, and enlarge it. The addition creates six state-of-the-art criminal courtrooms, 21 judge chambers, new and renovated office space for Family Court related functions, and space improvements for jurors, childcare, and the U.S. Marshals Service.

The expansion includes a variety of sustainable features such as a partial green roof and solar energy and water capture and management systems. Plenty of natural light finds its way into the building through the high-ceilinged atrium and glazed courtroom windows.

Structural Features

The expansion was designed to meet current progressive-collapse and ballistic requirements and is supported on concrete auger piles. The new basement levels house the fully upgraded mechanical systems.
